Fondly known as the Gateway to Commerce Education in Lucknow, the department is a pioneering institution which has earned a niche for itself in academic excellence ever since its inception in 1921 A.D.
It was in 1941 – 42 that the postgraduate degree, M.Com was instituted with the first batch of 22 students. The desire to grow, led to the introduction of Ph. D. Programme in the department in the year 1944–45 and the first Ph. D. Degree was awarded in 1946 to Late Prof. K.C. Sarkar - a former Dean of the Faculty of Commerce.
The relentless pursuit towards academic excellence, resulted in the instituting of D.Litt degree in the department in 1953 and the first D.Litt in Accounting in the World was awarded to Dr. R.M. Lal renowned Chartered Accountant and former faculty of this department.
Ever since its inception, the department has produced over 200 Ph. Ds and D. Litt degree awarded to 3 teachers, along with numerous research oriented articles authored by faculty members. In the last 5 years almost 100 students have been admitted to the Ph. D. programme in the department.
Built over approximately 1000 sq. meters area, the classrooms are commodious and the teaching methodology includes traditional as well as modern audio–visual aids.
As a result of continued expansion and growth, the department has also pioneered in the introduction of Self – Finance management programmes with the creation of ‘Institute of Finance and Management' in 1994 with popular management programmes viz., Master of Finance & Control (MFC), Master of Corporate Management (MCM), and Master of Management Science (MMS) etc., which have now been merged with the ‘Institute of Management Sciences' of this University.
The Dr. D. Pant Library of the department is a store house of knowledge, containing over 5000 books and important Journals and periodicals on various facets of commerce.
The department is alert about the need for 'Industry – Institution interface’ and constantly, is interactive with national Associations of trade & Industry.
For providing professional exposure to aspiring students, the department has been an accredited centre for ICAI and ICFAI, Hyderabad. It also invites regularly, professionals from the corporate world, to the benefit of the students.
To keep pace with changing times, the department has upgraded / restructured its syllabus as per the new UGC model curriculum, in 2002.
Placement activities hold centre stage in the department and the latest being the student of this department, being selected to the management cadre by the industrial giant TELCO in 2002.
The department has a proud lineage of alumni who are highly placed in the public and private sectors as well as Vice Chancellors of Universities.
With a vision for tomorrow, the Department continues its endeavor in UGC funded research projects and was honoured with the distinction of being awarded the SAR-DRS in 2004, which augurs well for the overall academic upliftment of both the teacher and taught that would definitely make this Department of Commerce, a centre of Excellence in the years to come.
